The article provides an overview of the key empirical explanatory approaches for development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dissociative approaches, biological models and learning theory, network theory, models of cognitive schemata and cognitive models will be presented. All these models have consistently contributed to understand the dynamic aspects of the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress reactions.Downloads
