The article deals with dark and gloomy sounds in various youth (sub)cultures and music cultures. The historical focus is on the period from the 1970s to the 1990s. It asks how the dark and gloomy is reflected sonically and expressed culturally in music cultures. The article argues that dark sounds are a central element across various musicand youth (sub)cultures, with the help of which moods, atmospheres and feelings are conveyed. It also argues that these forms of expression can be related to a social context in the postmodern era.
