The article outlines a theoretical model for analyzing the grammar and rhetoric of exhibitions, which is currently a work in progress. Using the theory of model forms, the collection of East Asian art from Situation Kunst (für Max Imdahl) is used to show how certain metaphorization processes taking place at various levels lead semantically, syntactically, and pragmatically to the constitution of meaning in the exhibition, thus performing important psychosocial functions.
